COURSE CONTENT:  Tracking is the only physical evidence resource available to SAR missions.  Trained human trackers are a primary, immediate response resource, for SAR managers to establish the (1) bona fides of a reported missing person incident, (2) factually establish the Point-Last-Seen,  (3) determine the direction of travel, (4) continue a physical evidence pursuit of the missing person’s travel.  “Tracking” is the most overlooked investigative tool for crime scene incidents!

This will be a 24 hour course beginning Friday, June 8, at 8:00 a.m. with registration and a four hour lecture, slide and video presentation to provide basic tracking understanding.
The presentation supports the following field training by providing student understanding of UTS training methods, manner and objectives.  Field training will allow student tracking team experimentation and practice of fundamental tracking techniques.  Students will progress from initially identifying a print, to “step-by-step” every track concept of following an identified sign line and practical tracking team response.  This is a skill development training program.  Students will learn what tracking actually is, how practical use skill may be developed, that individually they can learn to “see” physical “sign” that others look at and do not see.  (After introductions and registration, current UTS TKA and TKI students will spin off into a separate group for Tracker I course work.  Current TKII students are welcome to assist with teaching, or practice with the Tracker I group.)

SCHEDULE:  Friday, June 8, 8:00AM –5:00PM/6:30PM-10:00PM, Saturday June 9, 8:00AM-5:00PM, Sunday, June 10, 8:00AM-1:00PM

STUDENT NEEDS:  Students should be physically fit and equipped for a search/rescue or law enforcement field response.  Field practice will continue within reason during periods of inclement weather so students should be properly prepared with wet/cold weather gear.  Students need pen/pencil, note pad, small measuring tape, 5/8 inch dowel or similar with 3 rubber bands to use as a tracking stick (an old ski pole works fine) and a 3 cell flashlight.

UTS instructors will have on hand for sale to students a limited amount of text books $10 (Jack Kearney’s, Tracking A Blue Print For Learning How), measuring tapes $3, flashlights $10.

For more information, contact Rick Slatten, (218) 628-5258.  Checks should be made payable to “St. Louis County Sheriff’s Rescue Squad,” and mailed to 5735 Old Miller Trunk Highway, Duluth, Minnesota, 55811.
